Even 50 Cent, who has by now completely assimilated himself into the mode of mainstream hitmaker, understands that there must be a few key elements in place to ensure that listeners not only enjoy what he does but distinguish and remember it amongst so many other artists and their songs. The real problem with Ross' music is that there's little personality and almost no dramatic momentum. And while Ross' latest may or may not qualify as the industry or even genre's creative dregs, it's not high art either, which means that its charms are destined to be appreciated by those who embrace mainstream gangster rap - in whose ranks, it should be noted, I sometimes but not often find myself. This isn't cynicism, merely candor - I don't possess the technical sophistication to discern what keys or melodies or anything else work better commercially than others - so, like most of the rest of you, I am forced to rely only on my own preferences and predilections. Serendipity seems to play at least as much a part as anything else, so when even what appears to be the worst or lowest-common-denominator material succeeds, I can't say I'm especially surprised. I freely admit that I have no idea what separates hit songs from flops, or in a larger sense, what mainstream audiences respond to as opposed to more idiosyncratic ones.
